Neck Platysmal Banding
Neck Platysmal Banding or vertical neckbands are one of the early sings of aging in patients. This is especially true in females. Presence of vertical neck lines (Platysmal Bands) that become more prominent with grimacing and facial animation may be present even when the remainder of the face and jawline shows very few signs of aging. This physical finding can causes significant anxiety to patients.
There are several ways (non-surgical and surgical techniques) to treat and correct the neck platysma bands. Dr. Long examines each patient carefully and determines the best technique to give the correction the patient desires, according to his or her anatomy, while taking into account their lifestyle and needs with regard to post-procedure downtime.
Patients have multiple options for the treatment and correction of neck platysma bands (vertical neck bands):
Platysmal bands can be treated with BOTOX: The application of very small amounts of concentrated Botox in the vertical neck bands (platysma band) act to relax the platysma muscle, and therefore improve the severity of the Platysmal banding with minimal downtime. This procedure can be done in office on a walk-in / walk out basis. Longevity of the result requires serial treatment with BOTOX.
Percutaneous Platysmotomy: Consist in the transection of the platysma muscle at several points along the band through a percutaneous approach. The transection of the muscle avoids the formation of the band with animation or grimacing. The procedure can be done under local anesthesia. The downtime is generally associated with mild swelling and bruising that may last several days.
Retro-auricular Platysma band correction: Consists of reshaping of the Platysma muscle through small-concealed incisions behind the ear. This can significantly correct the Platysmal banding with a long lasting effect.
Submental Platysma band correction: Consists of reshaping the Platysma muscle through a submental (under the chin) incision. This approach allows direct liposuction beneath the chin as well as removal of fat from the subsurface of the Platysma muscle (subplatysma fat excision) to improve neck contour and address the double chin deformity in selected patients.
Neck Lift: Is indicated in patients with moderate to severe Platysmal banding that are associated with signs of aging like loose skin (turkey neck), excess submental (underneath the chin) fat. This technique is the GOLD STANDARD for neck rejuvenation and correction of Platysmal banding.
